What is the primary goal of reconstruction? Reunification, punishment, civil rights, other? (Thesis)

Our primary goal for reconstruction is the admission of pardoned states back into the union, and the increase and upholding of rights for freedmen, as well as to decrease tensions among freedmen and white people especially in South.

What should be done to the ex-Confederates?

The Freedmen’s Bureau would be extended to the newer “freedmen” or the pardoned southerners. This would include the education described in question two. Southerns would not just rely on this Bureau for the re-building of their cities. There would be a required community service by all eligible people in the cities kept in control by the soldiers sent to look after the South.

What should be done for the freedmen?

After the ending on the bloody Civil War, president Lincoln created a new freedom for former slaves, this new found freedom had its ups and downs in the lives of African-Americans. Ways that can improve the lifestyle of the hundreds of thousands of freed slaves, rights will be made to protect the rights of the African-americans. With no money coming out of slavery, taxes will be raised in order to create new lives and homes. The taxes will be raised 7% to help fund the lives of the newly freed slaves, and 6% will be made for the pardoned and northern states.Jobs would be another issue to tackle, due to the need of normalcy and money would be needed, jobs are scarce, but with the support of the government there are the chances to build railroads, and a chance to build own farmland. With the new ability to build schools, teachers will come from the North and teach those who have the in ability to read or write, although this will be funded by the government. Some will disagree with this movement forward in the culture of America, but it is the freedmen's rights now to move for and grow into society. To have the feeling of safety and support, churches will be made to express a feeling of religious freedoms. The 14th amendment gave the right to vote to any man of any color, or background, in the United states and anyone that comes and impeades on that right will be apprehended and charged. The merge of two cultures will be hard and there will be many hardship but there has to be ways to make the transition as easy and non violent as possible. No more economically and socially deprived conditions, there will be an equal America if we follow these steps forward.

Who should be able to vote and hold office in the new Southern state governments?

Once pardoned, most Southerners will get the opportunity to vote. Only about 10% of an admitted state will not be able to vote, those being main leaders in charge of the war who have been committed for treason.

Women, freedman and ex-confederates can vote, in order for those ex-confederates to vote they must have taken an ironclad oath of allegiance. Only three things are required for Southern states to regain full rights and representatives, they must allow the military districts and Union troops to help monitor them as well as completely accept the 13th,14th and 15th amendment. The last thing is that they must review the Black Codes and make them less extreme including the punishments since ex-confederates are going to be easily pardoned.

What requirements must be met before states regain full rights and representation?
One of the first actions that should be taken in the beginning of this Reconstruction era is the addition of the 30% Plan. Similar to Lincoln’s 10% Plan, the thirty percent would satisfy the radical republicans a little more, but would not be unreachable for Southern States. Another revision to another plan would be ALL Southerners would be subject to personal pledges to the Union for the pardon, and they would not have to do it to the president in person. There would be volunteer run stations places around all states run by the government who would run the readmissions to the union.

How should the Southern economy be restored?
Like we said in question two, in order to help the Southern Government come back from the war we will raise everybody's taxes by six percent. This raise will not only help the free slaves, it will also contribute to the Southern government to provide help during this time. Another way we will help with restoring the economy is by the money coming in from the Alaska purchase. The money that will come from Alaska is from fishing and fur trades with others. That should help the government with the Southern economy becoming restored. Another opportunity that the Alaska purchase will help with is by providing jobs for all those that are jobless, providing these jobs will also help the economy in the south if we add just a few more people from the South, then the North.Approximately five more people from the South, and they have to be pardoned in order to be provided this job opportunity.

What role should Union troops play in policing, governing, or rebuilding the South?

The Union troops will play apart during the reconstruction in the South to make sure things are running smoothly. The troops will need to be young and healthy soldiers to be sent to the South. There tasks will be to look after the South for the time of reconstruction so that no war or revolts will take place during the reconstruction era. There will also be on the lookout for any racial activity going on in the South. In order for us to put a stop to racial activity in the South the troops will also enforce the rule that kids will attend a class, the class will have union school teachers teaching the Southern children how racism is bad, and how it should be stopped forever. That is the description of a few tasks that the troops will need to do, but mainly they are there to enforce the laws and especially the new amendments that got added.

Re-state the primary goal of reconstruction. (Thesis re-stated)
With all these conditions we have for the reconstruction process our main goal is really just to unify everyone and make the United States better than it was before and during the war.Which by doing so we will have the South come back to the Union so we can be one Country again, also to bring freemen in the country with all of them having their rights that they have granted by the amendments.

Prepare a response to an "opposition" group. In your response you will need to point out the flaws and weaknesses and/or the strengths of their plan. The day after we present, be sure to upload your response at the bottom of their page. You will also need to be ready to challenge their plan in class, as their group presents.
